Harper’s Harpings – Which Platform?

There are fifty billion different places you can put your book for people to access. Ok, so I have exaggerated slightly, but it is a minefield.

So, options:

The big four, Amazon, B&N, Apple iBooks & Kobo

Smaller outlets, Flipkart, Overdrive, Oyster, Page Foundry, Scribd.

I could put the whole book on my website for free and ask for donations, an equally good option.

The question is which is the best?  Well I have not learned that yet, I have experience of the platforms and have been rejected on some.  If I want to raise my profile then Amazon is a no brainer, but which route, exclusive or non exclusive.p

I suppose it comes down to my motivation for writing the books in the first place. Is it money orientated or is it vocational. For me it is a bit of both. Also there is a responsibility to make sure that many outlets remain open.  Going exclusive with Amazon doesn’t promote diversity. Sony and Diesel gad to close their doors earlier this year sadly.

I have gone for the obvious and put it myself on Amazon and used Smashwords for everything else by the time the week is out, I will roughly be on 30 or so outlets.

Formatting for Smashwords and Amazon is easy peas and they make it painless for you.  Reporting on Smashwords is extraordinarily slow because they are dependent on the reports coming from the other companies.  Amazon is instant, someone buys a book, bam, it’s there.

I am sure there are other places I could try, inkbok failed, book tango didn’t want me, Lulu was a surprising wash out.

Do you know of other places?  I’d love to know.

Thanks for reading

Grace

Harper’s Motto: You will not be everybody’s favourite flavour, but that’s ok, because they will not always be your favourite flavour.  Be who you want to be and you will attract the people who will support you no matter what.
